Stereo / Stem Mastering
Stereo mastering entails working directly with the stereo mix as its source, which may limit the ability to make selective adjustments to individual elements within the track. For instance, raising the level of the drums in stereo mastering would proportionally increase the volume of all other elements in the mix. Similarly, equalization, compression, and creative effects applied during stereo mastering would affect the entire mix uniformly.
On the other hand, stem mastering offers a more versatile approach by providing separate access to individual elements. This enables the precise adjustment of specific elements, such as increasing the drum level without altering the balance of other components. Stem mastering can involve just a few stems (e.g., vocals and instrumental) or multiple stems (e.g., drums, bass, guitars, keys, vocals), allowing greater flexibility and control during the mastering process.
The advantage of stem mastering lies in its ability to address isolated issues within one element of the mix without affecting others. While not every stem may be altered during the process, the engineer gains the option to fine-tune each element if required, ensuring the best possible outcome for your music.
